You show a clear plastic, eight-sided (yep! octagonal) disc, with numbers from 1 to 10 circling it in a clock-like fashion and a rotating single pointer arm fixed to the center of the disc. The way many of us at Daytona Magic like to present it is to ask a young man to imagine any girl of his acquaintance, whether beautiful, medium, or plain, and then to give her a rating on a scale of 10 (as in the Bo Derek movie, of course). He is then to hide the dial from the performer while he rotates the pointer from its straight-up position to the number he chooses for his rating and then rotates it back to the straight-up position. The spectator returns the dial to you, and with suitable mysterious presentation ("heart vibrations," "brain waves," whatever), you reveal the number!
If you like, you may call it a clock dial with just 10 hours! ("Two hours off for coffee breaks," or "I work a 10-hour day," etc.) You then work out your patter from there. Any way you do it, it will be great ! Whether you favor mysterious magic, mirth, or mind-boggling mentalism, your audiences will love it. Remember, the number is not forced, and it is lightweight, easy to carry, and big enough for platform use.
