MENTALISM
In this effect by Al Smith you invite two people from the audience to assist. The two books, The Hidden Canvas and The Tenth Addition, are presented to the spectators, and the first spectator is asked to choose one of the two books. You hand the chosen book to the first spectator and hand the other book to the second spectator.
A third spectator is asked to think of a number between 1 and 100. Let's say this third spectator's name is "Tom". You say, "Tom is thinking of a number. That number represents a page in your books. Please turn to that page." Of course they can't, because they don't know the number. The natural and only solution is to have Tom announce his number. When the number is revealed, the first two spectators are asked to turn to that page in their books. Upon doing this, you reveal to both of them what the first word is at the top of the page in each of their books!
The included instructions contain additional routines and variations.

Flip through The Century's 100 Classic Films to show that every page is different - each two-page spread lists details of a classic film and an image of its lobby poster. Your helpers slide bookmarks between pages to select three completely different films.
Opening the book to those pages, they secretly select a title, an actor, and an actress that they combine to make a unique fantasy flick. An envelope that's been in plain sight is opened and the contents shown & read aloud - just like at the Academy Awards.
It is a 100% accurate prediction of the random choices made! Can be repeated and the fantasy flick will be entirely different.
As a kicker, your helper can freely select from among the thousands of production crew listed for all the films and you can reveal every detail of that name too!
On This Day...
Ask a participant for his day and month of birth. When he reads aloud from that day's entry in On This Day everyone hears the unique events that took place on that date.
Another helper and a new birth date obviously yield entirely different historical information. Then you ask a third person merely to think of his birthday. Instantly you void your impressions, writing the key phrases or sketching your thoughts. He reads aloud the entry for that day of the year - totally verifying your notations!

You explain how this P.D.A. has a "Memory Uplink Module". You don't have to type or write anything... you just have to think about a task, like picking up your dry- cleaning, and it automatically inputs it... from your brain... into your P.D.A.
Of course they don't believe you... you're a magician and you lie for a living! So... you prove it! Someone just thinks of an item from any grocery store. A box with six dice inside of it is shown to the spectator. The dice are arranged such that each possible die face is showing.
The spectator is then shown 7 different picture cards. Each picture card has a different arrangement of the six dice. The cards are placed face-down in front of the spectator, who then randomly selects one of the cards. A lid is placed on top of the box containing the dice, the box is given a slight shake, and then the top is removed, revealing that the six dice are now in the exact arrangement as is indicated on the chosen picture card! The box and dice are now given to the spectator for complete examination!

This is an outstanding Mentalism trick that fools just about everyone! The performer removes from his pocket a small velvet pouch. Explaining that all events in life occur due to some "choice or chance" a demonstration of this phenomenon begins. From the pouch is removed a small "casting ring" as well as three dice. The performer asks the spectator to attempt to cast the dice in the ring. The dice are totaled. Let's say the total is 11 (any number can be arrived at; the dice are not gimmicked in any manner). This, explains the performer, is an example of chance.
Now an example of choice takes place; the spectator is simply asked to select either the number 1, 2, or 3. Let's say 3 is selected. The two numbers selected by choice and chance are added (in this case 11 plus 3, the total is 14). From the pouch a piece of parchment is removed and handed to the spectator to read. It contains information on the 21 cards which make up the Major Arcana of the Tarot. Card number 14 (in this case the card entitled "Temperance") is read aloud to see if its characteristics apply to the spectator!
A packet of Tarot Cards is removed from the pouch. The performer notes that although choice and chance do come into play, the forces of magick can also exert a strong influence. As the cards are spread, only one card is seen to be face down in the middle of the pack. It is turned over and found to be the card number fourteen... TEMPERANCE!
Note: The chosen card is freely selected by the spectator! A different card can be chosen each time with the same amazing results! The chosen card is the only one found reversed in the Tarot pack! The effect resets almost instantly, making it ideal for walk around performers!
