BIRTHDAY SUIT by DAN HARLAN

birthsuit.jpg (6019 bytes)

Performer says, "I discovered recently that a deck of cards can be used as a calendar. It’s rather fascinating when you break it down. There are four suits in a deck of cards that represent the four seasons. Each suit contains thirteen cards, which match the thirteen phases of the moon throughout the year. There are 52 cards in the deck, 52 weeks in a year. And if you add up all the values of all the cards it equals... well, take a guess... actually it’s 364 You can add the joker for 365 if you like. Cards were most likely used as a calendar before they were used for games. The reason for this is that playing cards evolved from Tarot cards and ancient oracle for divination. Many esoteric practices are rooted in our calendar. Astrology is a good example."

Performer then asks for the spectator’s date of birth. He reads the spectator’s astrological sign and the description of his personality. Performer then states that he had a premonition to turn three cards face up in the deck just in case he met a particular person, and that person is the spectator. He explains that the first card face up in the deck is the messenger, the second card is the card of surprises, and the third card is the card of fate and fortune.

The performer then lifts the pack of cards to his face, revealing the backs of the three face up cards. The spectator is amazed that printed on the back of these three cards is the date of his birth--month and date. Furthermore, the three cards that reveal the birth date have different colored backs than all of the other cards in the deck. This is a great effect for any audience. Very versatile and easy-to-do.

K. B. CARD RISE

kbrise.jpg (6708 bytes)

Credited to Ken Brooke, this is an almost impromptu rising card effect which can be done with any deck of cards - even a borrowed one if you wish. There are no cards to be forced - the spectators can freely select one, two, or three cards from the deck. There are no threads, wire or other gimmicks to set up. The rising of the cards is entirely under your control, with the cards rising as fast or as slowly as you wish.

The performer displays a pack of cards, a metal case, or houlette to hold the pack and a magic wand. The pack of cards is examined, shuffled and one or more cards freely selected by members of the audience. The cards are seen and remembered, replaced in the deck, and shuffled in. The pack is now placed in the metal houlette with the cutout front (which can also be examined if you wish) so that the faces of the cards are visible through the cutout.

Two hooks on the houlette hook it over the center of the magic wand. The performer holds the wand by the tip in one hand and makes magic passes with the other. Slowly, one of the selected cards rises out of the deck. When the card is more than half way out, performer removes it then repeats for the other selected cards to rise.

If you like, you can have the cards signed by the spectator on their face, since the cards that rise are all the same that were selected. This is one of the best card rising effects out there. A must for any performance. Everything you need is supplied.

COLLECTOR'S EDITION by ANDREW NORMANSELL

In this effect, produced by Mark Mason, the four aces are removed from a Bicycle deck of cards and placed on a glass or on a table. Three additional cards are freely selected, signed and returned to the deck. The four aces are picked up and placed face up on the top of the deck. Without any moves, the cards are spread and there are now 3 face down cards trapped in between the face up aces.

This looks astounding and it is very smooth. The trapped cards are really the three cards that were signed. The three cards are removed and now the aces are passed out for examination.
