Edward Marlo is a phenomenon who has unquestionably made an indelible mark in the world of magic. In the past forty years he has published numerous innovative and influential books, plus an impressive number of articles for various magazines. The Complete Marlo Bibliography is still incomplete, but at last count there are over 1500 items, covering 3200 pages of text, and over 57 books! Over and above this remarkable prolificacy is the consistent superiority of the material itself. And all of it chronicles his long, ardent, and fastidious love affair with the pasteboards. Marlo Without Tears is another fascinating chapter in the Marlovian quest for the Real Work.

Jon Racherbaumer, in his own words, is "a conscientious dilettante, who strives to discover useful and lasting material and then translate it into readable books and articles." He is the author of eighteen books and manuscripts, including the best-selling CARD FINESSE and THE ASCANIO SPREAD. He is also the controversial and innovative publisher of Hierophant, Kabbala, and Sticks & Stones, magazines that continue to inform and stimulate the cognoscenti. He has also contributed over 100 items to various magic magazines.

Of Marlo he has said, "It's been my goal to infuse my writings with the same kind of enthusiasm and esprit evoked by Marlo's actual performances to somehow show Marlo's marvelous thinking, while giving a vicarious sense of life to the dead reckoning of dry, technical prose."

TWO IN THE HAND & ONE IN THE POCKET

by LEWIS GANSON

twointhehand.jpg (6852 bytes)

The above title has been used because it suggests what is seen by the spectators during the performance of many versions of the type of trick that you will study in this book. Three small objects are shown, two are placed into the left hand and the third one into a pocket. On opening the left hand, not two but THREE objects are seen. This is repeated a few times, the effect becoming more bewildering as the routine proceeds.

In some versions the objects eventually vanish or are transformed into something different. From this basic theme, a whole range of tricks has been evolved; the objects employed being almost anything of such a size that can be concealed in the hands.

The principle used is very, very old, indeed it is likely that it was derived from one of the oldest tricks in magic, the Cups and Balls. The variations which have been evolved using the cups and balls principle could have been the inspiration behind the 'two in the hand and one in the pocket' routines which we know today. It seems logical that performers, being familiar with the principle through the Cups and Balls, would at some time set aside the cups and develop effects and routines with the balls alone. So it could be that the Roman "acetabularie" were the originators. Performers of the Cups and Balls were so called from the Latin word "acetabulum" which means a cup.

We are told that the 'balls' used by the first performers were actually pebbles. It is also a fascinating thought that the cups and balls principle could have been developed from tricks performed with pebbles before the cups were introduced. This could make it the first magical effect ever performed - an interesting speculation.

The book contains thirty-six pages. It has numerous photographs and detailed instructions for a number of unique routines.

ANNOTATED MAGIC OF SLYDINI by LEWIS GANSON

BUY $100.00 WORTH OF BOOKS, WE TAKE 10% OFF..... BUY OVER $300.00 WORTH OF BOOKS, WE TAKE $20% OFF.....

PUBLISHER'S NOTE: Did Orson Welles think there were scenes in Citizen Kane that could have been edited differently? Probably so. Did Melville believe there were parts of Moby Dick that could have been written more tightly? It's entirely possible. However, if there were any alterations that these masters wanted to make to their creations, they've been lost to antiquity.

This is not the case, however, with Lewis Ganson's The Magic of Slydini. Some time ago, Dr. Gene Matsuura went through the text with Tony Slydini and took careful notations as Slydini re-examined the Ganson book, noting what could be altered or deleted based on observations and experience with the material gained after the book's publication.

That these notes existed brought us to an interesting crossroads as plans were made to reprint The Magic of Slydini. If the book were reprinted verbatim, it would preserve the historical accuracy of the original Ganson book but would ignore the additional data provided by the Matsuura notes. This unfortunately, would rob future students of Slydini's priceless insights into this material.

Our solution to this dilemma is as follows. Throughout the book, you'll find text set off by blue brackets. The reader, according to the Matsuura notes, should disregard the words within these brackets. In some instances where these brackets appear, there will also be blue text. This text, again according to Matsuura's notes, represents Slydini's corrections or changes and should be used to replace the words in the brackets.

We feel that The Annotated Magic of Slydini not only preserves but also updates a classic magic book. Every word of Lewis Ganson's original text is here, but by incorporating Gene Matsuura's notes, we believe we've also found a way to enable a departed master to revisit his masterpiece. The results, hopefully, will please the historian and student of magic alike. - Louis Falanga, Publisher
